New! More Students Earn Continuing Education Units

The second ‘Introduction to Disability/Rehabilitation with Asian/Pacific Islander Americans’ online course is now over. NTAC facilitated this free course, conducted by Paul Leung, Professor and Director of the Rehabilitation, Social Work and Addictions department at the University of North Texas and Nan Zhang Hampton, Associate Professor of the Department of Administration, Rehabilitation, and Postsecondary Education at San Diego State University. Students who completed the assignments each earned ten Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from the Commission on Rehabilitation Counselor Certification (CRCC). Planning for the third offering has already begun, with a tentative starting date of April 15th, 2006. Please reserve your space in this course by sending an email to james.brightman@cds.hawaii.edu.

New! Disability Leadership Institute

NTAC-AAPI is proudly sponsoring the Disability Leadership Institute on May 8, 2006 at the TAPA Conference Room at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort & Spa in Honolulu, HI. With Opening Remarks by Dr. Robert A. Stodden, Principal Investigator, NTAC-AAPI, and potential Keynote Speeches by Senator Daniel Inouye, Olegario Cantos VII, Elaine Chao, John Hager, and representatives from national, local (Hawaii), and Pacific Region areas. The Institute is an opportunity to share the best practices, employment success stories, and tools developed by NTAC-AAPI over the past four years and to develop action plans to carry out NTAC-AAPI’s mission beyond the current project period ending in September, 2006. The National Council on Disability (NCD) is currently conducting a study that will gather information from a wide range of sources and stakeholders regarding the issues that persons with disabilities encounter in seeking and maintaining employment. VSA Arts: Call for Entries

VSA arts seeks works from artists 22 and older who have a physical or mental disability for the juried “Transformation” exhibit scheduled for June in Washington, D.C. Participate in an Online Discussion for a Study of Disability and Employment Issues

The National Council on Disability (NCD) is conducting a study regarding the issues that persons with disabilities encounter in seeking and maintaining employment. As part of the study, NCD is seeking persons with disabilities, employers, service providers, and other stakeholders to communicate their concerns and employment experiences facing persons with disabilities in an online discussion. This study will result in a comprehensive report and set of policy recommendations by June 1, 2006. http://www.ncdadaemploymentstudy.com/

Job Opportunities for Low-Income Individuals (JOLI) grant program

The purpose of the JOLI program is to provide technical and financial assistance to private employers in the community to assist them in creating employment and business opportunities for low-income individuals. Projects focus on one of three program strategies: (1) new business ventures, (2) business expansion, and (3) self-employment/micro-enterprise. New Guide for FBCOs Seeking Private-Sector Funding

The HHS Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has published a new guide for faith-based and community organizations that details the process by which FBCOs can build private sector partnerships.

The Kennedy Center Leadership Exchange in Arts and Disability (LEAD) Conference and Training is accepting proposals for pre-conference workshop intensives at the 2006 conference to be held August 3-6 in Washington D.C. Pre-conference sessions will be held on Thursday, August 3. Proposals must be submitted to the Kennedy Center Accessibility Program by January 30, 2006. Four to six proposals will be selected by committee, and notification of acceptance will be sent by February 10, 2006. Regional Resource and Federal Center Network Web Site

The Regional Resource and Federal Center Network has launched a network Web portal. Its seven centers—the six Regional Resource Centers for Special Education (RRC) and the Federal Resource Center (FRC)—now have a central Web site. The six RRCs and the FRC are funded by the federal Office of Special Education Programs to assist state education agencies in the systemic improvement of education programs, practices, and policies that affect children and youth with disabilities. http://www.rrfcnetwork.org/
